Where…
One of the major producers of large, cultured pearls is Australia. The shores of Northwest Australia are the ideal setting for White South Sea Cultured Pearls. Broome, one of the places in Australia is very famous for its pearl production. The Black South Sea Cultured Pearls are mainly from Tahiti and the Pacific Islands and the relatively smaller pearls come from Japan and now China also..
Things to Remember while buying pearls…
-Pearl Lustre: Lustre refers to the sheen of a pearl. The better the sheen, the greater the value of the pearl.
-Pearl Nacre Thickness: Nacre is the intensity of the outer layer of the pearl. The bigger the pearl, the greater the nacre thickness and the lustre, making it more valuable. Pearls with thin nacre are subject to chipping and peeling.
-Pearl Shape: They have a variety of shapes but pearls that are entirely round are of more value. For earrings, the ideal pearls are drop pearls and pear-shaped. Quite a few pieces of jewellery are made in irregular shaped pearls also.
-Pearl Surface Texture: A natural pearl has a number of scrapes on its surface but that does not diminish the value of pearls. A pearl with a number of noticeable scratches on its surface are used in necklaces and earrings and the scratches then go unnoticed.
-Pearl Colour: The colour of pearls is known as ‘body colour.’ As pearls can be found in a variety of colours like white, pink, black, gold, blue and in shades of cream, it is not a major aspect in influencing a pearl’s value. Some pearls have a second tinge of colour to it. For example, a white pearl might have a pink or blue tinge to it. Some pearls are artificially coloured also.
-Pearl Size: Similar to diamonds, the bigger the pearl the more pricey it becomes. A baroque pearl is measured in terms of length and width and a round pearl is measured in millimeters across its diameter.
