Cultured Pearls…

They are man made pearls. It is formed when a foreign body is artificially introduced in the oyster bed. They are cultivated where the temperature of the water is just right and is clean and healthy.

Emergence of cultured pearls…

Cultured pearls came into the market in the 1920s that caused a huge fall in the prices of the natural pearls. Only after the 1960s the cultured pearl was acknowledged in the markets but by that time the cultured pearl had taken over the market in an inexplicable way. This is the only man made gemstone that has been so widely accepted..

Saltwater Pearls…

Saltwater pearls are formed in the sea waters. The Australian oysters are not formed on the farms, they are found at the bottom of the sea off the north west coast of Australia.

Divers assimilate these oysters. They are then injected with a nucleus, which is made up of shell from a North American mussel and a small piece of mantle that is taken from that part of oyster where there is nacre secretion. Once this is done they are then taken to a pearl farm where the pearls are formed in 20-24 months. There the pearl farmers regularly look them after till they are ready to be harvested. The pearl harvest takes place in the months of June and September. The Akoya pearl is a salt water cultured pearl and are Japanese.

Freshwater Pearls…

They are mainly cultivated in Japan and China. The cultivation process is very similar to that of the saltwater pearls barring a few exceptions. The cultivation takes place in mussels. They don’t take as long as saltwater pearls to be formed. These pearls are produced in Japan, China and America.
