Which is which?
Natural Pearls: Pearls which are formed without any human interference are natural pearls. In the present time, they are very uncommon and are only auctioned.

Cultured Pearls: These pearls are formed when we artificially insert a foreign body in an oyster. They typically take anywhere between 1 to 3 years to form before they can be harvested.
Imitation Pearls / Fake
Pearls: They are completely man made and are made from materials such as beads of glass, plastic or refined shells covered with a gloss usually made from fish scales and in recent times from reconstructed nacre or mother of pearl.
Ways to determine a fake pearl from a real one…
-The simplest way is to rub the pearl across your teeth. If it’s a real pearl it will feel rough after the rubbing or absolutely smooth and silky if it’s a fake pearl.
-Another way is by rubbing two pearls together. The fake pearl will feel smooth. But real pearls will create friction and get scratched. The scratches will disappear once you rub over the scratches.
-Pearls do not melt, hence if you put the pearl near the flame nothing will happen to it. If burn marks do appear, simply wipe it clean.
